During the 2005-06 academic year, Ryan joined the Center for Public Space Research in Copenhagen as a Fulbright Fellow and visiting postgraduate student. The Center consists of a small group of researchers and is located at the Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture in Copenhagen.

In addition to participating in the everyday, on-going activities at the Center, Ryan investigated new approaches to designing the suburban landscape (Shared Open Space) and the state of contemporary Danish urban design practice (The Architect's Changing Role in City Making). There was also a bit of time for some competition entries, including a proposal for a Chicago neighborhood (Burnham Competition).

The experience itself was a fantastic opportunity to learn from the Danish approach to urbanism as well as to begin to define and articulate future research goals.
